2009 Marchand & Burch Chambertin-Clos de Beze

  • 2009 Marchand & Burch Chambertin-Clos de Beze 09BPNCBS6

    Wine Overview

Opulent red and blue fruits balanced by considerable oak tannin with savoury and smokey notes. Rich and powerful fruit on the palate with a great depth of flavour, presence, fine tannin and a mineral acidity. A wine of enormous potential.

“‘Primus inter pares’ (first among equals) is the way that Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is seen in the company of other grand crus, and this wine shows why. The class and the power are unmistakeable.” David LeMire, Master of Wine

"The wines of Chambertin and Clos de Bèze have a great reputation. At their best these wines are certainly not just among the top wines of Burgundy but among the top red wines of the world." Clive Coates, Master of Wine

“Chambertin and Clos de Bèze blend grace and vigour, austerity and power with finesse and delicacy. Together there is all that is necessary for a synthesis that is generosity and perfection itself." Gaston Roupnel (1871-1946), Burgundy author and French historian

From all reports the 2009 reds from Burgundy are outstanding.

“The red wines are very appealing: the colours are good, the fruit to the fore and very ripe, the tannins are unaggressive and the net effect altogether seductive. Someone said to me a few decades ago that if I found a taste of mocha on the nose of a young Pinot Noir, this was a very promising sign for that wines' future. There is a lot of mocha in the 2009s. Another signature of a very fine vintage, which is prevalent in the 2009s, is the quality of the generic wines. If the Bourgogne Rouges are this good, the better wines must be really splendid. This is a vintage which should be in everyone's cellar.” Clive Coates MW

“Excellent, and very Consistent, Vintage of Opulence, Charm and Seduction. The average ’09 has that wonderful sense of “inner” concentration (as distinct from extraction) that only natural sap can bring. It is what you will see referred to in the tasting notes as ‘dry extract’ and that is always a positive sign of top quality. The most successful 2009s are wonderfully fresh, seductively opulent, elegant and refined burgundies that should be more than capable of successfully rewarding short-to-mid-term cellaring out to 20 years or so. There is also a tenderness to the wines that render them most beguiling. Moreover, the wines adhere quite closely to the appellation hierarchy though at the same time, many wines indeed transcend their respective levels, particularly at the lower levels. The other aspect of the better ‘09s is how fine the tannins are and this contributes to the seductive and charming character that so many of them exude.” Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

“2009 – Well it’s a bit early to be definitive but clearly it will be splendid! The question is not ‘good or bad?’, the question is ‘how good?” The Burgundy Report
