2002 Howard Park Chardonnay Reviews

The nose is a touch herbal but there is nice fleshy citrus and pineapple characters there too. A flavoursome pineapple palate ? rich, creamy and nutty.

The first impression is of toasty oak, but further acquaintance shows tangy grapefruit, nectarine and nutty marzipan aromas nestled nicely behind the wood. The palate is fine-boned, intense and long-flavoured?sheer class and should develop well over a few years.

The 2001 vintage of this was really, really good. And if my tasting memory serves (my memory?s not good, let?s be honest) this vintage is bloody tremendous? This is a ?hubba bubba? chardonnay ? a big burst of fruit and the flavour stays in your mouth for ages?

Howard Park winemaker Michael Kerrigan is producing a seemingly endless stream of top-class wines across the varietal spectrum. A seamless and super-fine palate reflects precision engineering of nectarine fruit and barrel-fermented French oak; the epitome of elegance and at the start of its life.Best drinking: Now ? 2010.

Another superb Howard Park chardonnay, sourced from Denmark, Porongurup and Margaret River. The aromas are intriguing, with green-apple, dairy-like malolactic and toasty barrel characters over tropical and lemon fruit. Acid level is high, giving bite and vibrancy to the palate.Ageing: drink now to 2008

Subdued nose with soft oak in background and floral, fruity lift. The palate is full of flavour; very good varietal fruit, sweet oak and creamy malo. Nice and firm on the finish

A superb chardonnay from WA?s Denmark, Porongurup and Margaret River. The aromas are intriguing: green apple, dairy-like malolactic and toasty barrel characters over tropical and lemon fruit. Acid level is high, giving bite and vibrancy to the palate. Screw capped.

Each year the Howard Park chardonnay gets incrementally better. This shows a beautiful texture created from extended barrel fermentation and a small amount of malolactic fermentation. It has a strong smell of grapefruit with subtle nut and melon. The palate is still as tight as a drum with a fine acid and delicate fruit. It will benefit greatly from cellaring.

There are creamy, toasty, cedary influences here but the pure strength of the citrus-laden fruit drives straight on through, with white-peach delights trailing in its wake. This is fabulous stuff, fruit-driven but moulded in the winery too, with wispy, leesy, lean grapefruity characters evident if you look hard enough. In top form.Drink: Now - 2008
