2001 Howard Park Scotsdale Shiraz Reviews

A big, bold and powerful wine, it displays everything one would expect from a premium Shiraz ? spicy notes, loads of fruit, yet maintains a certain elegance that is often missing from this varietal.

Lifted raspberry bouquet with lots of spicy white pepper. Sweet, ripe, fruity palate of plums and cherries that?s lean and a little tough with nice tobacco-like notes.

Now screwcapped, this Mt Barker shiraz is notable for its excellent structure, with abundant fine-grained tannin. Bullied found intense cool-climate fruit, with pepper, berries and sweet oak. He also saw fleshiness and tight tannins. Bourne thought it was too gripping, while I thought it had the structure to age well. I noted a touch of eucalypt/mint in the aroma, which others described as menthol.

A vibrant fruit streak runs through the core, with plums and black cherries overlaid by a sparkle of lifted violets. Spice, pepper, dry savoury herbs and a dab of pine sap fill out the background, with a little more spice evident on the palate of the cork-sealed example. Tannins are fine-grained and the length is average, although a little shorter under cork

Smells plummy, leafy, with a sniff of licorice and gets even better the longer it sits in the glass, evolving raspberries and currants. There's plenty of plum and raspberry fruit in the mouth as well, backed up by long, chewy tannins. There's wholemeal and cassis to close and also just a bit too much alcohol heat. Very much on the plus side is the packaging though: sealed with a screwcap so consistency is guaranteed. Will come together further during the next few years.

Red berry notes with damson, cherries and spice provide fragrant aromas that complement the coffee mocha oak and vanillin undertone. The palate shows attractive sweet, savoury fruits with integrated acidity, and dusty tannins that have a green tobacco hint. Quite tight in structure, the wine touches on some anise and spice characters towards the back palate and finishes with persistence and fabulous length. A wine that will further integrate.

I love the focus and fruit expression here. The oak, acid and fine tannins harness the luxurious soft fruit, pulling it together into a neat package of the best the Great Southern has to offer for this variety. The French oak works superbly with Great Southern shiraz and this is the perfect illustration of that. This is quality stuff.
