2001 Howard Park Chardonnay Reviews

Strives for elegance, it?s honeyed, hazelnut overtones coming to the fore as the flavours linger. Seems modest, then the finish kicks in and whoo-ee.

Whilst there are a growing number of consumers that have become disenchanted with Chardonnay, forming the loose group going by the name of ABC (Anything But Chardonnay.) There is also another group that has discovered the joys of Chardonnay made in a more complex style than has been evident with commercial wines. The simple primary fruit flavours of peach and tropical fruit have been pushed aside to produce Chardonnays of wonderful complexity. Wines such as Giaconda, Curly Flat and Leeuwin Estate Art Series are world class examples. The Howard Park is a welcome addition to the clan. A complex Chardonnay matured in French oak. Bright straw colour. The nose is intense with aroma of butterscotch, honeysuckle, yeast lees, fig and melon. Creamy texture with spicy oak meshed with yeast lees and layers of citrus, melon and fig. Excellent length. Crisp acidity and long spicy lemon aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years (2006-2007)

A vibrant mid yellow in colour. Restrained aromas that offer refined citrusy grapefruit and mineral nuances accompanied by understated oak. There is a lovely texture and balance on the palate with harmonious integration of fruit, malolactic and oak-influenced flavours, with zesty acidity and excellent length.

Winemaker Michael Kerrigan is hell-bent on moving to Stelvin for all Howard Park wines and used it with this one. The fine, elegant and fruit-driven bouquet of citrus and melon is followed by a fine and perfectly modulated palate, with oak purely background support. Lingering delicacy
