1998 Howard Park Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reviews

Aussie Bordeaux? Take the dark red fruit of cabernet grown well, tense and terse, red and black. Then add a different herbal component from the tobacco or cedar or pencil lead that grows in the grapes near the Gironde: Here in Australia?s southwest, the herbs are more brash and brassy, giving a scent of rosemary and fragrant desert scrub. It?s a sophisticated wine, still tight, best decanted hours before serving, or cellared for five to eight years.

Intense almost cigar box-like nose with dusty and fragrant overtones. The palate has a beautiful texture of fine firm tannins, woven with intense yet supple fruit. The oak treatment is excellent. Complex middle palate with good weight carries to a very long finish. Strikes a great balance. Drink 2002-12.
